Top Vietnamese player Nguyen Tien Minh failed to reach the last four of the Philippines Open badminton contest after a 21-17, 19-21 and 15-21 defeat to Chinese top seed Chen Hong in quarter-finals.
The Sports Daily reported that Tien Minh cause a defeat scare for the top seed, who is currently second in the world, when he took the opening set with a 21-17 victory.
However, the Chinese player fought back in the second set, winning 21-19, before sealing his victory with a 21-15 win in the third set.
Earlier, Tien Minh beat Athens Olympic gold medallist and Asian Games gold medallist Taufik Hidayat from Indonesia on his path to the quarter-finals.
