In the men’s singles final we are about to be treated to the match that we’ve all been waiting for. Both Lin Dan of China and Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia won their respective semi-final matches to book their places in the final in Japan. Lin defeated Denmark’s Peter Gade while Hidayat defeated Malaysian Lee Chong Wei. The last two meetings between these superstars were very disappointing. At the Thomas Cup here earlier in the year, Lin Dan easily defeated an injured Hidayat, and then this summer in Hong Kong Hidayat walked off the court only minutes into the match as a result of biased line judging. This is most certainly the final to watch.
The women’s singles final isn’t nearly as mouth watering as the men’s singles final. As so often is the case in the women’s events there is another all China final between Zhang Ning and Xie Xingfang who defeated Zhu Lin of China and Wang Chen of Hong Kong respectively.
The women’s doubles was similarly disappointing with all four pairs in the semi-finals coming from China. As usual Gao and Huang made it to the final, but without a match as Du and Yu withdrew. The will face Wei and Zhang in the final.
The talk surrounding the men’s doubles event has be focused on Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya, and whether this pair may very well be the best that badminton has ever seen in this event. Today they faced China’s current top pair Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun and put to rest any doubt that the Indonesian pair are better. Tomorrow Gunawan and Wijaya will face the Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong who defeated Japan’s home team pair Sakamoto and Ikeda.
Finally in the mixed doubles we will see an all Indonesian final as Widianto and Natsir defeated Xie and Zhang from China, and on the other side of the draw Limpele and Marissa from Indonesia upset Thailand’s Prapakamol and Thoungthongkam to book their place in the final.
