Zhang Ning Avenges All England Defeat

China’s Zhang Ning avenged her All England defeat by Pi Hongyan of France in the quarter-finals here in Basel.  Zhang won in three games 21-17, 10-21, 21-15 and will play Germany’s Xu Huaiwen in the semi-finals.  On the other side Lu Lan and Jiang Yanjiao both of China will face off for the other place in the finals.

While not as dominating as last week, China also has a strong presence in the men’s singles with both Lin Dan and Chen Jin left in the semi-finals stage after beating Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Shoji Sato respectively.  Lin will be playing the Indonesian youngster Simon Santoso who must be exhausted after going through qualifying to make it this far.  Chen will be playing the Danish number one Peter Gade.  After a disappointing All England Gade will surely be hungry.

After winning last week in Birmingham Malaysia’s Koo and Tan are looking strong again as they once again defeated World Champions Fu and Cai of China.  Now they will face the USA/Indonesia combo of Gunawan and Wijaya.  On the other side we have something of a surprise pair as Indonesia’s Sukmawan and Hian defeated 5/8 seeds Hwang and Lee of Korea 21-18, 21-17 to book a place against Denmark’s Eriksen and Lungaard.

The women’s doubles is much more open than usual as only one Chinese pair remains.  Zhao and Yang made it to the final four by defeating Japan’s Akao and Matsuda 18-21, 21-15, 21-13.  They now face Chinese Taipei’s Chien and Chen who knocked out Singapore’s Jiang and Li 21-16, 21-17.  The other side of the draw features Indonesia’s Polii and Marissa who easily defeated Grether and Schenk of Germany against Korea’s Lee and Lee.

In the mixed doubles the last remaining European pair surprisingly is the Polish pairing of Kostiucyzk and Mateusiak who did well to knock out Denmark’s Eriksen and Nielsen in a convincing 21-12, 21-17 win.  They face Korea’s Lee and Lee who defeated second seeds Zhang and Xie.  On the top of the draw Singapore’s Jiang and Wijaya benefited from the withdrawal of the top seeds to make it into the main draw, and then from the withdrawal of the teammates Li and Saputra to bypass the quarter-finals.  They will play Indonesia’s Polii and Rijal in tomorrow’s semi-final.
