Top seed Lin Dan was forced to retire from his semi-final match against youngster Simon Santoso after trailing 27-25, 5-0. Lin Dan appeared to be in pain, and spoke briefly with the tournament doctor and referee, and decided to continue, but shortly after he had to stop playing. Now after going through qualifying Simon Santoso has booked himself a place in the final against China’s Chen Jin who managed to defeat Denmark’s Peter Gade 21-16, 21-19. During this match Peter Gade had some strong words with the umpire about some questionable line-calls, but to no avail.
Zhang Ning may have lost last week in Birmingham, but this week was different as she knocked out Pi Hongyan of France who had beaten her last week, and then today she defeated Xu Huaiwen of Germany to book her finals ticket. There she will face her teammate Lu Lan who defeated Jiang Yanjiao, also of China.
Looking to add to their Super Series portfolio Malaysia’s Koo and Tan have made it to a second consecutive final after defeating veterans Wijaya and Gunawan 23-21, 13-21, 21-7. In the final they will face Denmark’s Eriksen and Lundgaard who defeated the surprise semi-finalists Sukmawan and Hian 18-21, 21-15, 21-18. Koo and Tan have already won two Super Series events, Malaysia Open and last week’s All England Open.
China looks to be in a good position to take the women’s doubles and maintain their streak of Super Series titles, they have won all three so far. Zhao Tingting and Yang Wei defeated Chien and Cheng from Chinese Taipei 21-14, 21-19. They will face Korea’s Lee and Lee who defeated Indonesia’s Polii and Marissa 21-14, 14-21, 21-13.
While being disappointed in the women’s doubles, Indonesia’s Polii and partner Rijal booked themselves a place in the mixed doubles final after defeating Singapore’s Jiang and Wijaya 21-12, 21-12. They will now play Korea’s Lee and Lee who defeated Poland’s Kostiucyzk and Mateusiak in three close games 21-18, 11-21, 21-17.
