Beng Hong continues slump with another defeat

Malaysia's Kuan Beng Hong continued with his free fall when he failed to clear the first round of the Swiss Open qualifying tournament in Basel on Monday.

He slumped to a 21-15, 16-21, 14-21 defeat by Canadian Bobby Milroy and it was the second consecutive time that he was eliminated in the qualifying tournament. He lost to Indonesian Simon Santoso in the second round of the All-England qualifiers last week.

Beng Hong, who was one of the three Malaysian singles players for the world championships in Madrid last year, is currently ranked 33rd in the world.

With the drastic slide in form, he can kiss goodbye to his hopes of qualifying for this year's championships, which will be held in Bukit Jalil in August. A country can have a maximum of three entries if they are all ranked among the top 16.

Veteran Wong Choong Hann survived a tough opening test against Indonesian youngster Tommy Sugiarto. He beat the son of former world champion Icuk, 21-16, 11-21, 21-13. But Pei Wei Chung fell to a 13-21, 14-21 defeat by Thailand's Poompat Sapkulchananat.
