Rasmussen comes through, again!

On Tuesday, April 17th, Peter Rasmussen delivered a surprise victory over Denmark #3 Joachim Personn, in the Golden Set of the Bronze Medal League Match, to give team VEB a third place finish over Team Vest Sjaelland.

With a 15-13 lead in the winner-take-all set, Personn defaulted with a hamstring pull sustained while diving for one of Rasmussen’s jump smashes.

“They were both playing brilliantly and we knew it was going to be tough for Joachim,” said Vest Sjaelland CEO Michael Kjeldsen. “It could have gone either way in my opinion but I feel we were unlucky to lose in that way.”

Personn had already delievered a surpisingly easy victory over Roslin “The Destoryer” Hashim in the 1st Mens singles by a score of 21-15, 21-10. At the same time, Rasmussen was tearing apart his old Danish rival Anders Boesen 21-17, 21-9.

With Team Vestsjaelland taking the womens doubles and Womens Singles, Tony Gunawan had the chance to seal the match for his team with partner Rasmus Mangor. Their opponents, World Championship Finalist Rob Blair and Jutland faithful Thomas Rojkaer, appeared on paper to be no match.

However, Blair’s net play combined with Rojkaer’s powerful hits from the backcourt, left Gunawan without answers and tied the team match at 3-3.

Kapser Fangel, sport Chief of Vestsjaelland, predictably chose Joachim Personn for the Golden set, fresh off his wins over Hashim and Kenneth Jonassen.

But Peter Jensen, sports chief of VEB, made the surprise call to Ex-world Champion and Thomas Cup “Clutch Man,” Peter Rasmussen, to close the season.

“Roslin was not 100% physically,” said Jensen, “and we knew that if there was a chance, it would have to be Peter. But we didn’t expect him to play at that level!”

Indeed, Rasmussen had not shown such a level since retiring 3 years ago. With his current schedule of playing twice a week, combined with recent injuries to his foot, the result was a surprise to everyone.

Everyone except Rass.

“I always have confidence in my abilities,” said Peter after the match. “ I don’t focus at all on results in these situations. I just go out and relax and do what I can. I know that if I do that, anything is possible.”

The Gold Medal Match between Team Greve and Team Kastrup is tonight at 7PM, Denmark time.
