Peter Gade has stunned the badminton world by winning the Malaysia Open after being hospitalized only days ago. Peter defeated China’s Bao Chunlai 21-15, 17-21, 21-14 in the final to clinch the first ever BWF Super Series event. After a disappointing loss in the semi-finals of the recent Denmark Open, where few of the world’s top players were present, it will certainly be a boost to his confidence winning this event, where all of the world’s strongest players played. The new Super Series format is going to make it exceptionally difficult for the BWF players, and to make it clear exactly how difficult it is consider that Sony Dwi Kuncoro and Wong Choong Han both had to qualify.
The women’s singles event lacked the same star power that the men’s event had, but it did demonstrate that the new format has opened things up for other challengers. The final featured two surprise players, Zhu Lin and Wong Mew Choo. Zhu Lin won the title 21-15, 21-12.
In another example of the extra challenges that are placed on the players with the new Super Series, the winners of the men’s doubles event were qualifiers. Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong defeated Indonesian alumni Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya 21-15, 21-18. Although Tony and Candra lost, they are proving they still belong among the world’s best.
As expected the first women’s doubles Super Series title was won by China’s Gao Ling and Huang Sui. With the exception of losing the first game of the final against Polii Gresya and Marissa Vita, their was relatively little challenge from any of their opponents along the way. The final score was 19-21, 21-12,21-11.
Gao Ling extended her winning ways in the mixed doubles with partner Zheng Bo when they defeated England’s Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms 21-12, 14-21, 21-15.
