China Continues Dominance In Birmingham

China is well on track to sweep all five events of the All England Open Super Series. With the men’s singles guaranteed, and the women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles almost guaranteed, it will be up to the men’s doubles World Champions Cai and Fu to deliver the most difficult gold for China.

The men’s singles semi-final line-up will feature Lin Dan against Bao Chunlai and Chen Yu against Chen Jin as all their challengers failed to stop the dominance of China. The women’s singles features a similar story with the exception of Pi Hongyan from France (she did once play for China however) all of the other semi-finalists are from China. Pi will face off against Zhang Ning while the other semi-final will feature Xie Xingfang and Zhu Lin.

The women’s doubles is similarly stacked in China’s favour as only one pair is not from China. Malaysia’s Chin and Wong will play second seeds Yang and Zhang. The other semi-final will feature first seeds Gao and Huang and Wei and Zhang. Gao is also in the running for the mixed doubles title after defeating England’s Robertson and Emms 21-17, 18-21, 23-21 with her new partner Zheng. The only none Chinese left in the mixed doubles are hometown hopefuls Clark and Kellogg from England.

The real question for China lies in the men’s doubles. Top seed Cai and Fu will play Gunawan and Wijaya who have proven that they are still a force to reckon with in spite of their age. If Cai and Fu can win against the 2000 Olympic Champions they will have to play either Koo and Tan or Eriksen and Lundgaard.

Stay tuned to see if China can sweep the All England Open..
